An interview with Gudrun Wallenbock about their exhibition in Vista Gallery

J- I found that your main course is about intercultural matters, and we saw your choices. My first question is about how you found the international identity in this course? I mean that you wrote about international identity and influence of environment on our mind. And how Its show in art works? What’s your exact reason to choose these ones?

 .

G- Ok. You can choose the lot more works just as more selection but i’m not talking about international identity , I just talking about identity on different  perspectives. I think therefore we also choose ‘’Where are we?’’ because what does it mean : Am i Iranian because i was born in Iran and i live somewhere else? And Am i Austrian because i live in Austria i was born in Austria. You know i think that’s so influences what your identity mean your personal identity. and what i think is this here your personal identity and you can have started images of identities my personal idea is that i can have identity now and maybe tomorrow an other one because i’m in surrounding maybe i’m in bad mood and then  I’m different so these identities is more what i was choosing is like personal idea of how do i want to present myself and i deer about and what i’m suppose to be because like  ‘’ Siegfried A.Fruhauf’s video  Hohenrausch ‘’  He is played the typical image of Austrian identity because if you take look to the internet and travel agencies Austria’s images is mountain and culture and music and every thing nice and idyllic so what’s he took , He took just a lot of lot of old post cards and what’s the result, it’s permitc film maker and the title is Hohenrausch . Hohenrausch is Mountain trip translation in English but raunch is more like disease it’s like being drunk and Hohenrausch is also an illness when go get too high up there are so little air so you get a little crazy or it is the same when you life down  so it can be dangerous but this sense of illness and drunkness and therefore he was just play around with it.

but using the typical Austrian image or what Austria is kind of making pra so if want to go to Austria you go the mountains and see these like Switzerland and at the same time he was using the music the traditional music but he didn’t do it the music is by another artist who did the modern version of the old traditional music so they played really on the perception of the image of Austria it’s not the personally image but it’s the image which was made of. then we take go on with the exhibition and we have the film of Lisl Ponger what she did was taking found the photos  from people who had to immigrate , You know this problem here that’s a lot of people going out to the Austria we had this in Ferdis when the war started that all the people lot of lot of people left and they didn’t know are they coming back or not? so when you listen to this video and watch it at the same time that’s mostly a women standing on the ruling of the shape and looking forward to what ever and always talking back like ago nosh where is street i was born and so much have to remember when i was playing with my friends at this street at this part of the town and at the same time looking forward so this is mixed identity , who am i where am i? because I’m not there I’m on trip to where ever , I don’t know if there is a trip back possible or not? so this a lot of questions arising and pictures coming up in your mind so that’s a one part of movies when you see parts of Casablanca she says wow this reminds me one part of Vienna you kind of   what this is nothing to do with it , but you still make your own image because you create your own identity this is think of going to another country not violentierly intact  your on the trip but have to live and not knowing what’s coming up will you ok with your new identity or will last be my old one over be a mixer or what ever so this is just this, but this a German lady in fact living in Austria , I have choose artists living in Austria because what i want to do with this exhibition is want to make a travel so there is already some interested to show this is show in Mexico so the neighbors around but we actually a year ago we have talked about doing an exhibition from Austrian artists here and i have to admit that i don’t have believe in nations in art form nations because i don’t know if i where an artist would i do Austrian art or German art or Iranian art , what so ever i think this is had nothing if i board out it has more to do what you brought  out what your identity is what your memories are? what your dreams are ? it is influence by way you live, that for sure because it looks different if you live here or you live in us or in russia or in china or in Austria but it’s still i think you can’t put a label like a national label on it. and therefore i decided ok just use a world with the artist that live in Vienna well actually all of them live in Vienna and they take concerns about their identities but i have to admit that all these artists i have worked with them two years already .

.

J- So in this project you choose some artists and your propose was show how different international identities  can live together and have different ideas and different views? because in your choice i didn’t any special matter, but you know in this time in the middle east you see that this one kind of identity is the main reason of killing people . In one side they have kind of identity problem they told that we war for our identity. but in my idea you choose some artist that they live in a peace and they are peaceful. but  how about the artist who lives in this region and they have many problems with their identities. in our country in our culture we even have many matters about our identity we have  many complicated problems about our identity. So in my idea you show that how many different artist and people can live together and have different identity.

 .

W- But that’s maybe the safe place in Europe , Specially Austria maybe that’s interesting  because Austria you can do every thing you want the every one is nice you know we are kind of the island of niceness every thing is good there but they have problems but compared the middle east there is no problem but people hardly see when they live in there so we have lot of discution with the artists because i always told them there will be an exhibition in Iran and you know we have these problems like sensorship.

.

J- What about Iranian artist Arya?

 .

W- He lives in Vienna and he lives with his Kurdish identity. I see his Kurdish and he grow up in Sanandaj so he has his personal ideas and his taking this identity with him to Vienna but we have a very interesting project in January about the Kurdish identities and there will be big exhibition kurdish in November because we had the workshops already and there we had a discussion with Nake Noher a famous american photographer was working on Kurdish she was in Vienna we are working together and then we had a discussion that where his kurdish identity come from then we pick it out of the one it was in fact created in Vienna because he left his identity came out and that’s what i pick it out for my self because i grow up in nice town in Austria every thing is perfect you know nice whole world. and then i started to travel but not only travel but living in other countries and only if you live in other countries and if you live in other countries.  I figured it out that i was Austrian because i  I figured it out what was missing  for my self beat the mountains beat some special foods you probably have this is well so i think this is exactly the same process when some one back to home back to Iran and with his work he created partly here partly there but still on his personal identity which was created true be outside  country. and then we thinking , I think it’s always better to be far away to comeback to your rout. That’s just my personal think because the first i go away the more become Austrian .

 .

J- In your idea how can have influence in the mind of society with these curatorial projects ?

could these projects have influence on mind of persons who lives in war conditions?

how can art have correct influence to reduce the violence?

 .

W- You know what i do in Vienna. I have an art space where i show the artists from middle east. only one reason because i think art is best platform for mutual understanding to a load people to talk with the hope of art about personal or what ever subjects we thought killing each other you know without using politics  without using economics reasons. Art is the best platform because it’s a kind of translation you know an artist just don’t use his language even the writers uses their languages . but uses special medium be the stones be the drawing be the textone be the photographs be the videos what so ever and then you can discuss about it. people meets so what i figure out in my space is that people meets and figure out that wow there is art in iran for example i got so many questions like there is no art in Iran they always have their old art but no new one . I said why? because they can’t be. so why? they don’t know why they can’t have art. they just think that cant be art . Last exhibition i had was art from Syria the artists living in Syria . It means in the middle of war. And we had a curator invited to come to Austria and to show the art works where made in the war what ever they were very dark ones we are sure but still there was hope there was really on waiting for what ever. waiting for end of war so there was a lot of lot of discussion and people realize oh there is life there and that’s the exactly what people realize in Austria when we show the art in Iran because then they figure out wow there is a good art work they know how to do it. there are intellect inteligent because they think so many bad thing to you i’m sorry to tell you but the image of Iran like the Austrian image as i said it’s like the nice country rich  and the mountains and lots of culture and the image of Iran is war Atomic and muslims but bad really the bad fourm so that’s kind of hey that’s not kind of be it. why do you transport these things? and i just try to make people meet Iranians .Last time i had one lady coming to see me and said you know i met the really nice guy from Iraq here , I said yeah why not? and he could speak German. I said why not? you know no one would ever come to see me and tell me sth like that about a french guy. So why can’t an Iraqi guy not be nice? and they meet not because the meet on the street they would not talk to each other they meet because of the art. Because they interested and this is the kind of media people can understand if they want and they can get in to touch because if you have a painting or an installation here you can have your own case  and then you have a possibility to talk with this people. So did the choice i did for these art works was really made an exhibition for here. Probably if some one has ask me to do this exhibition first in Mexico i would probably have choose different artists or different art works for artists i don’t know but i will take this exhibition back to Austria so as first new spot we gonna show it in Austria because i also want to hear what people think about this exhibition in Austria? In Austria all these artists so well known so it’s not a surprise like here . Because here what i figure it out there was so much discussion here and even last week when the opening was it was a holly days so a lot of people were on holly days. It was crowded so many people and so much discussion and i even got a lot of questions after words. So i think it can make people think about it because my concern is not only have in my space in Vienna to make people understand that there is also good people and good art and another culture in the middle east and you can easily get a plane and come here and not be afraid because many people tell me. But i also want to show people here that there is special art a kind of art there because i very often have to feeling here the people think that we in Austria have such a good life we are rich we don’t have to work every thing is good. Come on life is so hard in Austria some times i think life is more easier here. But there is so many hopes and dreams from the people here to be there, specially the artists because they think as soon as they arrive there they are famous. that’s not true. Come on they have so many artists and no one cares about all the artists like here there’s so many artists and in fact no one cares but in fact here you have more opportunities to shows than in Europe, because in Europe every one is fill up for all the artist and the big the galleries that want just the famous artists to make money well so it’s a really big and hard struggle and i think that also what i wanted to show here to get the combination with the mutual understanding.
